Article: Getting a Different Perspective
by Michelle Ulrich
On
a personal note, I am very excited!
My husband, Lee, just got his pilot's
license. Now, he can fly me all over
the place to give presentations on
Virtual Assistance. I have my own personal
airplane chauffeur. How cool is that?
I have loved flying since I was about
eight years old and began visiting
my grandparents.
It was
a big deal for me, as I lived in a
small town on the Oregon coast (Florence),
we had one stop light in town and about
5,000 residents. It was beautiful,
but I can remember wanting to experience
other places.
To prepare
for my visit, my mother would drive
me an hour away to the nearest airport,
then I would board the airplane by
myself. I always got special treatment
from the stewardesses. If you flew
as a kid on United Airlines, you got
your wings! It was a cheap little gold
pin in the shape of wings, but I loved
getting them every time. I got a deck
of cards and lots of other snacks the
other passengers didn't. (Now, I don't
get that special treatment unless I
pay for it.)
At
the time I flew as a kid I HAD TO have
the window seat. I would pretend the
landscape beneath the airplane was
a patchwork quilt and the people were
ants or my 'peeps,' as I called my
wooden Fisher Price people. I would
imagine all sorts of fun things while
up in the air. As we descended for
the landing, the landscape began to
transform from my fantasy into reality
again.
I flew
for several years before actually moving
to Sacramento, California. Guess which
seat I still have to have? Yes, it's
the window seat. I still go back in
time to when I was little and look
out the window with wonder. The best
part for me now, as an adult, is the
perspective I have about things. When
I am way up in the sky looking down
on things, I can put my life into a
different perspective. I can quiet
my chatter and listen to my inner voice.
It's when I am up there in the air,
or even when spending time at the ocean,
that I feel I am part of something
bigger.
My favorite
places I have visited (so far) are
St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, St.
Lucia and Puerto Rico. Hmmm, I
am going to have to do a presentation
and have my husband fly me there! Do
you know any Virtual Assistants or
colleges looking to explore new ways
of doing business in the US Virgin
Islands or Puerto Rico? Send me an email.

Where do you get your
inspiration, fresh perspective, or
new ideas? Maybe it goes back to your
childhood, a favorite place you've
visited, or a mentor. As long as you
have something or someone to fill that
space, that's all that really matters.
If you don't have something or someone,
get one! I have a silent mentor who
is an author and she doesn't even know
it. I read her books and take her advice
to have someone else's perspective
now and again.
