Featured Article: How Does Stress Affect You?

by Michelle Ulrich

woman

I have often wondered how others deal with stress, so now, I will ask this question directly, "How does stress affect you?" You can post comments about this on our blog.

  • Do you...
  • get headaches?
  • neck and back problems?
  • cry?
  • get angry too easily?
  • get stuck and can't move forward?
  • feel like giving up?

I think many of us feel, or have felt, the same way. I actually have to see a chiropractor several times a week because I have severe neck and should pain on a consistent basis. I have joined a gym and planned to do yoga, but their schedule is not in sync with mine. So, now I belong to a gym that I use maybe once a month. Ugh! Here's a neat little (complimentary) download that you can use to help you excercise at your desk...if you can manage to keep it turned on.

There are other downloadables, too.

Here's how the US lines up with other countries around the world on the issue of stress. The top 10 countries may or may not surprise you. Data was collected from small and medium-sized businesses.

  1. Taiwan
  2. Mainland China
  3. Phillipines
  4. Botswana
  5. Hong Kong
  6. Singapore
  7. Malaysia
  8. South Africa
  9. Poland
  10. US
  11. Netherlands
  12. UK
  13. France
  14. Spain
  15. Italy
  16. Sweden

I think I need to move to Sweden! Actually, I don't think stress is something you can leave behind if you move somewhere else. It seems like it's more a matter of lifestyle and choice. I know in my mind what I need to do to reduce stress, but my excuse is that I am growing a successful business and NEED to work. Actually, I know in my heart and soul that everything I am doing in my business will get done, just not on the time table I have chosen, even if I slow down.

Being in our society today has some drawbacks, such as when I order something online. If I don't get an auto responder telling me that my order has been placed, I think the order didn't go through or that I am somehow not important. My teenage daughters live on their instant messengers. I have a love/hate relationship with it myself. I like the instant part sometimes, but it's more annoying than useful to me. I would prefer to pick up the phone and actually have an old-fashioned conversation. My daughters talk on the phone and instant message simultaneously on occasion. That defeats the purpose of both technologies! Being in and 'instant' society can sometimes make us feel too connected or 'plugged in' instead of allowing space and the natural rhythms of time to enter into our thoughts. My mind feels crowded by all the information streaming in.

I imagine what a load of stress would be lifted off my shoulders (literally!) if I could shut off my computer for an entire day or even an entire weekend, get outside, take a walk and breathe some fresh air...

I don't know about you, but I plan on taking at least one day off this weekend to play with my family and get some 'me' time planned, too. I hope you all have a fabulous weekend and for those of you in the US, I wish you a safe Memorial Day weekend!
